About Amboseli National Park

Location

The park is located northwest of Mountain Kilimanjaro, on the Kenya/Tanzania borders. It is perfect for visitors who wish for a quick getaway, and is close to the beaches of Kenya coast.

Climate

Generally, Amboseli National Reserve has dry and hot weather, except during the rainy season. The area has two rainy seasons: the long rains from April to May and the small rainy season from November to December.

During the dry season the park becomes very arid. Consisting of volcanic ashes spilled from Mount Kilimanjaro, and with the absence of rains, dust is raised creating several reels.

Sightseeing is a little difficult during the rainy season, because the park is wet everywhere, making the roads muddy and difficult to practice.

Although the park is open all year, the best time for sightseeing mammals is during the dry season with warm and dry days, from January to March.

For birdwatching, the best time to visit is from November to January. It is when you can witness the residents, even birds migrating here during the palearctic winter.

Best time to visit

Best time to visit Amboseli National Park Kenya is during the dry season, from June to October. It is when the animals flock to the lakes and water holes, giving the opportunity to explore the park’s wildlife.

Opening Hours

The park is open from 06:00 hrs. to 18:00 hrs, everyday.

Getting There

By road – you can book a tour with Natural World Kenya Safaris from Mombasa or Nairobi. Access from Mombasa is through Tsavo West National Park through the Kimana Gate.

Note: many of the park’s interior roads are unnavigable during the rainy season because the volcanic soil becomes too muddy.

By air – The park only features one air strip for light aircraft at the Empusel gate.

Wildlife in Amboseli

Amboseli consists of over 80 different mammals, ranging from the tiny spectacled elephant shrew to the huge bulk of the African elephant. There are also over 400 bird species.
