Construction and History of Abu Dhabi International Airport

Visting The capital of the United Arab Emirates, you might be landing on the sole international airport, Abu Dhabi International Airport (IATA: AUH, ICAO: OMAA). 
Abu Dhabi Airport was built on 30.6 km far from Abu Dhabi city, to be serving 20 million passengers in 2014, through its 3 terminals over an area of 3,400 hectares. 

The airport work date back in 1974, in the government work on developing the national airport that was Al Bateen Airport (then called Abu Dhabi International Airport) that used to serve the city of Abu Dhabi. Due to the obstacle of accessing the airport on Abu Dhabi Island, that was connected to the city via a bridge, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, ordered the construction of the New Abu Dhabi Airport. 
Subsequently, by the late 1970s, the location was set and construction started in 1979, and the inauguration in 1982, to be given the name "Abu Dhabi International Airport" and the other/old airport Al Bateen airport.

In the early years of the airport operations, the only way to reach the airport was the private vehicle or taxis. Until the construction of Abu Dhabi's bus network between the 2000s and 2010s, to be introduced as the city-to-airport bus services.

By the end of 2011, Abu Dhabi authorities signed a letter of intent to preclearance facilities similar to Aruba, Canada, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and Ireland. Then by 2014,  Etihad airlines had their first flight to the U.S. from the facility on January 25, 2014.

• The International airport of Abu Dhabi was awarded the Middle East 2nd Best Airport in Service Quality Awards by Airports Council International.
   
• The New "Abu Dhabi International Airport" was built spectacularly with the circular satellite terminal, and a semi-circular terminal connected by a single linking passage.
   
• The airport operations is dominated by Etihad Airways, the second largest after Emirates in the UAE. All along with more than 30 airlines flying to 120 destinations in more than 60 countries.
